August 23rd, 2004a writer. I’ve always had a fascination with writing. I’ve always dreamt of writing. There’s much I like about it: The feeling of the fingers touching the keyboard, seing the screen fill with my thoughts and ideas, being able to bring them into the minds of other people. I also like the idea of people getting to know me through reading my stuff; heck, who wouldn’t be impressed of seing some of his work printed or being asked questions about things one wrote? So far, more of my experience in writing is in code. Most of the time, I like writing code, but I’d also like to write prose. I still have the impression that they’re somehow related (or at least, some kinds of programming are related to some kinds of writing).
My problem is just that I have so little ideas. Or rather, I have some ideas but am seldomly happy with the way they turn out. I seem to be unable to develop them into more than just static vignettes. Character development? What’s that? But maybe it’s a matter of focus and discipline. So far, I’ve always written down in one run, more stream of consciousness than anything else. But maybe the trick is just to sit down a certain times and continue doing the thing.
Backups
August 19th, 2004In the office, we currently have about 120gb of disk that need regular backups. We wanted to have a solution that enables us to store offsite copies easily and wasn’t too expensive. Tapes were out for handling reasons — those drives that we were willing to afford would have meant a system of cascaded incremental backups, making restoration of single files a tape-shuffling issue. DVDs don’t hold enough data and their storage times are not yet fully understood, so that didn’t quite sound so practical, either.
In the end, we decided to outfit one of the older machines around (a Pentium II) with removable hard disks (normal Western Digital 160 GB drives, fitted into run-of-the-mill aluminium mobile racks). We have two drives fitted into a carriage, so there’s always one at home and one in the machine. During the day, the appropriate machines copy their data onto that one volume over the network and I can take along the disk in the evening, bringing the other one next morning.
Most of our machines run NetBSD so I’ll just quickly run down the very basic configuration, we have here, but it should also work with many other unix-like operating systems. Operating system and all esential stuff is on a disk that always remains in the backup machine, the backup volume is a drive off the secondary IDE controller.
The machine is only powered on when the disk is in, so there’s no choking on missing disks — this could be avoided by using a hotswap-enabled IDE controller, but currently, we don’t have that need. As soon as the disk goes in in the morning, the machine is powered up, boots and shares the backup volume via NFS. The other machines (all running NetBSD) have that volume in their automounter. Scripts are started that use dump(8) to copy their appropriate slices onto the backup drive. As soon as they’re all finished, the machine powers down again, waiting for the drive to be taken out.
And that’s all there is to it!
Price of the machine: practically nothing, we had that already. We even had an empty 4U 19″ enclosure, so it’s gone into the machine rack.
Price of the drive enclosures: 25 € each, making it 50 €
Price of the hard disks we’re using today: starting from 80 €
That makes our configuration total 210 €. Not bad for 160 GB of backup storage.

August 17th, 2004Motorola hat sich wohl doch wieder in den Entscheidungsprozess gedrängt: Es gibt ein neues Lustobjekt. Je nach Preis kann es durchaus passieren, dass mein nächstes Handy vielleicht doch ein Razr wird.
Man sollte nicht so viele Technik-Blog lesen, da sieht man immer so fürchterliches Spielzeug!

Hartzen
August 16th, 2004In ganz Deutschland wird wegen „Hartz IV“ protestiert. Selbst in Aachen gibts jetzt Montagsdemos gegen die Reform der Arbeitslosenhilfe.
Ist das nicht alles ein wenig spät? Die Gesetze sind nun schon seit Monaten bekannt und beschlossen, ihre Konsequenzen also nicht ganz neu. Trotzdem kommt man jetzt erst drauf, dass man vielleicht protiestieren und demonstrieren könnte?
Natürlich ist es nicht schön, wenn Menschen weniger Geld haben. Aber liegt nicht auch ein gewisses Mass an Ungerechtigkeit darin, dass das Verhältnis der Leistungsbezieher vs. der Versicherungszahler sich immer mehr verschiebt? Sollte man nicht da vielleicht auch mal regelnd eingreifen?
Was ich auch noch nicht verstanden habe (oder, besser gesagt: Wozu ich noch keine für mich verständliche Erklärung gehört oder gelesen habe) ist, wie denn jetzt Hartz IV für mehr Arbeitsplätze sorgen soll. Klar, wenn es jetzt freie Stellen gibt, dann sind Leute verpflichtet, sie auch anzunehmen — das wird noch eine sehr spannende Dynamik am Arbeitsmarkt, der sich nun von einem Abnehmer– zu einem Anbietermarkt umdreht. Aber es gibt doch einfach nicht genug! Ich sehe immer noch keine zusätzlichen Anreize für Unternehmen, neue Arbeitsplätze zu schaffen.
