I’m back to developing Apps and software to distribute ourselves. But oh my, have times changed. There’s so many things that are different now. I’m using entirely different tools for the apps, I’m trying to find ways to get word out to the right people that the apps exist. And making money seems to be quite a bit harder now — particularly being opinionated like I am.
You see, for our first app — Finsternis, available on the Apple App Store and hopefully soon on Google Play — I think that the appropriate way is to just have a one-time payment, when you do get the app. No in-app-buys, no yearly or monthly purchases; you pay and get the app. That’s the way to properly treat customers, particularly with an app like that. We could also make it free, of course, and use it as a distribution medium for ads — but I dislike that even more than I dislike recurring in-app purchses.
So now, I am standing here and thinking about what to do: do I start developing in public, so that more people know about the stuff I do, and potentially also quite a bit about how I do it? Do I want to continue building in private and then release things ever so often? Then, I have the challenge of making the new stuff known each and every time.
How do you do these things? Or how do you feel about them? What’s your approach?
