Ich habe gerade einige Zeit damit verbracht, SuSE 9.2 am Notebook zu installieren. Die fremden Betriebssysteme verwende ich unter VMware; 9.2 hat sich aber unter meiner normalen Installation kräftig gewehrt. Auch die Lektüre diverser Foren war nicht hilfreich.

Geholfen hat dann, mein VMWare von 4.5 auf 4.5.2 zu aktualisieren. Dann klappte die Installation; ich musste nur den USB Support im Guest deaktivieren. Ich habe die Installation auch im Text-Modus durchgeführt, das erschien mir am robustesten. Aber jetzt tuts.

Coming in via Joi Ito’s blog, I just read a funny text on The need for reform on the Internet. I’m somewhat amazed on how wrong this text is in many respects.

There have always been central agencies that were quite important to the Internet. The text even makes a reference to it: Jon Postel is featured prominently. He, personally, and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority shaped the network in a big way. The Internet Engineering Task Force has been instrumental as well. The text speaks of the quality of RFCs as the defining documents of what the Internet is today — but it requires a lot of dedication, editing and work to have a collection of standards in such a high quality. Then, there’s the local RIRs: ARIN, RIPE, AfriNIC. For all practical purposes, they’re centralized structures as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m for the power to innovate on the network. Innovation is a good thing. I’m also not against making money on the Internet; heck, I’m trying to make my living off networking stuff, too. But I’m against such innovations like SiteFinder by virtue of which Verisign broke the DNS because they want to make more money. I’m against reforms that would remove any form of netizen-based democracy on a global scale that can ban VeriSign from implementing that service again.

Also, it seems that all the text is concerned with is the domain name system. It’s true that it is an important part of network infrastructure — and a publicly visible one at that — but it shouldn’t be equated with all internet policy. There’s other interesting policy decisions around; how to switch from IPv4 to IPv6 for instance. But that has nothing to do with registries or registrars.

Maybe the author needs to do a little more research?

Apple hat ja nun ganz neu auch den iPod photo vorgestellt, der neben Audio auch Photos (aber keine Videos) darstellen kann. Das Ding hat auch einen Ausgang für Fernseher.

Apple hat ja auch eine, angeblich recht nette, Präsentationssoftware namens Keynote.

Irgendwie fehlt mir da die Verbindung.

Auf meinem Notebook läuft Windows XP. Und als braver User hatte ich die Updates auch gemacht; dabei kam mir auch SP2 auf die Platte. Und dann begannen die Probleme, insbesondere mit dem eingebauten WLAN. Nun muss ich dazusagen, dass ich ein ThinkPad verwende und die auch noch eine eigene, gar nicht so schlechte Verwaltungs-Software für WLANs haben. Aber zuhause brauchte ich bis zu 40 Minuten um mich ins WLAN einzubuchen. Leider habe ich die Verbindung zum Service Pack erst sehr spät gefunden — und es heute deinstalliert.

Und plötzlich konnte ich mich rasend schnell ins WLAN einbuchen, habe keine Verbindungsabbrüche mehr, und auch sonst ist mein Rechner wieder gewohnt schnell.

ARGH!

Nach so vielen Jahren als grosse, grosse Softwarefirma hat es Microsoft immer noch nicht geschafft, ihr Qualitätsmanagement auf die Reihe zu bringen!

Ich bleibe jedenfalls bis auf weiteres Service Pack-abstinent.

Ich erwähnte ja bereits, dass wir einen neuen Drucker kaufen wollten.

Bestellt haben wir ihn auch.

Nur: Bis heute ist das blöde Ding noch nicht da! Mittlerweile habe ich mehrfach beim deutschen Vertrieb angerufen, und es heisst, er ginge bald raus. Heute hiess es sogar, er ginge heute oder morgen an den Distributor.

Schön langsam machts keinen Spass mehr. Jetzt muss das Ding wirklich, wirklich gut sein.

Jetzt habe ich das ganze Zeug schon so lange und mir bisher noch nie die Zeit genommen, damit herumzuspielen. Seit gerade eben habe ich meinen Palm zuhause online, und zwar via Bluetooth am Notebook. Hilfreich war für mich die sehr idiotensichere Erklärung unter Palm Bluetooth Internet Setup, damit wars eigentlich in wenigen Minuten erledigt — ziemlich doof, das nicht schon früher zu machen.

Damit kann ich jetzt auch in der Badewanne surfen.

Eine Universal-Freisprecheinrichtung. Also, richtig universal: Fürs Handy, für mein normales Festnetz-Telefon am Schreibtisch, für den PC (und damit für VoIP) und in Stereo auch für einen mpeg-Player (vielleicht sogar am Palm). Und dann einen Akku, der lang genug hält.

Aber vielleicht gibts sowas schon und hat sich mir einfach noch nicht vorgestellt.

Motorola hat sich wohl doch wieder in den Entscheidungsprozess gedrängt: Es gibt ein neues Lustobjekt. Je nach Preis kann es durchaus passieren, dass mein nächstes Handy vielleicht doch ein Razr wird.

Man sollte nicht so viele Technik-Blog lesen, da sieht man immer so fürchterliches Spielzeug!

Es sind übrigens Entscheidungen gefallen:

Drucker: OKI B6300dn. Doch noch mal was anderes als zuerst angedacht. Wenn alles gutgeht, steht er Freitag schon im Büro.

Handy: SonyEricsson Z600. Leider aber bei der Telekom noch nicht erhältlich.

Es wird besser: Wir haben die Anzahl der interessanten Handies reduziert. Das MPx200 ist ausgeschieden, weil es kein Bluetooth hat (Motorola: Was soll denn das, bitte?), damit ist es raus. Wir sind also beim Z600 von SonyEricsson und beim V600 von Motorola, wobei das letztere aus Stilgründen fast einen gewissen Vorteil hat.

Jetzt müssen wir dann nur noch unseren Dealer fragen, was er uns für Preise machen kann.

Es ist bald wieder soweit, mein Mobiltelefon-Vertrag steht zur Verlängerung. Bei der Gelegenheit wird aus dem derzeit privaten Handy vermutlich auch endlich ein Firmentelefon. Aber wie beim Laserdrucker: Ois ned so aaafoch. Wir wälzen seit Tagen Besprechungen, kucken Blogs und Blogs, daneben natürlich Herstellerwebsites und befragen Leute rund um uns. Daniel hat mir sogar sein Neues für ein paar Tage geliehen, damit ich mir das mal näher ansehen kann.

Eigentlich sind meine Anforderungen ja ganz einfach: Ich suche ein kleines, leichtes Klapp-Handy, dass Bluetooth im Gerät hat, dafür aber keine Kamera. Und genau diese Eigenschaften hat kein Gerät. Und dann stellt sich mir die Frage, ob ich mir nicht – einfach zum Rumspielen – das MPx200 näher ansehen sollte, auch wenn es nicht ganz billig ist. Aber .NET auf dem Handy, das könnte mich fast in Versuchung führen. Mal sehen. Das CF62 finde ich zwar auch ganz hübsch, aber das hat wieder kein Bluetooth.

Kanns nicht einfach das Handy geben, das ich haben möchte?

We’ve been using an original LaserJet 4 that I bought eleven years ago. It still serves its purpose quite well, but there are a few things that are finally becoming bothersome about it. The main problem right now is that there is no way to turn it into a duplex printer and we want to print a run of books in the next few weeks.

It appears, though, that one of our requirements for such a new printer is a fairly unconventional one: We want it to have little tolerance on how it draws paper. Most printers I’ve had my hands on in the last few years are not particularly reliable in printing the lines parallel to the edges of the sheet. More often than not, you can definitely notice the difference. Duplex printing makes this even worse: the two pages don’t line up well enough because the mechanics of the printer are not good enough.

Now, the question is: How do we find out which printer is good at that? I’ve heard reports that the Kyocera FS-1900 is not too bad, and Brother has a few that work well. I’m positive that the LaserJet 4 family was the last decent printer HP built, so they’re out the race. And I’ve always had a soft spot for Lexmark, but I’m not fully sure why that is so.

This is going to be hard.
